Fluorspar Prices Edge Higher in China

2025-09-10 16:00 D.D.

China’s fluorspar market has seen a modest uptick in recent weeks. As of last weekend, the average domestic price stood at 3,281.25 RMB/ton, marking a slight increase of 0.38% compared with 3,268.75 RMB/ton on August 31, according to data from Business Society’s commodity analysis system.

Supply Side: Tight Mining Operations

Supply remains constrained. Domestic fluorspar mining continues to face regulatory and environmental challenges, with outdated mines being phased out and new exploration proving difficult. Enhanced safety inspections and environmental standards have raised barriers for mine operations, particularly in southern China, where production rates remain low. This has led to tighter availability and encouraged some producers to hold back inventories, supporting higher market prices.

Demand Side: Rising Hydrofluoric Acid and Refrigerant Markets

On the demand side, hydrofluoric acid (HF) prices have strengthened to 10,500–11,000 RMB/ton in September. Operating rates remain around 50%, with supply relatively stable, but the rising HF market has increased procurement activity for fluorspar.

Meanwhile, the refrigerant sector has also gained momentum, driven by supportive policies and strong confidence among producers operating under quota controls. Although high prices have somewhat slowed buying activity, healthy inventory levels and structured supply chains continue to sustain fluorspar demand.

Beyond traditional refrigerant demand, fluorspar is playing a growing role in strategic emerging industries such as new energy, advanced materials, defense, and nuclear sectors. Applications include lithium hexafluorophosphate, PVDF, graphite anodes, and photovoltaic panels. The ongoing expansion of new energy and semiconductor markets is expected to further support fluorspar consumption.

Outlook: Prices Likely to Stay Firm

Looking ahead, limited mine supply due to safety checks and stricter regulations will likely keep the market tight. With downstream markets such as HF and refrigerants showing strength, short-term fluorspar prices are expected to remain on an upward trajectory.
